so i'm supposed to write about a policy and comment
or either state a problem we might face.

hmm.. i have absolutely no idea wad i should say!
zzz. okayz serious liao.

since i have already presented on pragmatism in class
i think i shall continue talking about it here.
much easier for me to find a topic. =p

Pragmatism
definition: a way of dealing with problems in a sensible practical way instead of following a set of rules

My group and I have already illustrated the idea of pragmatism in class by stating the example of the casino policy that Singapore has recently decided on. Remember?

Pragmatism is not very easy to do, because of the fact that you are not following the rules that are already fixed by society, in order to deal with the problem effectively. This may cause backlash and disapproval from the people, unless the reason behind the government's decision is really justified and benefits everyone. Which in most cases, it does.

However, not everyone might have the same thinking. What benefits one party might bring loss to another. That's why the government's policy at times is only for the good of the majority of the country, and not so for the rest. It has to consider the welfare of the people before deciding on the policy, and it is very difficult to fit in everyone's problems into the agenda.

I feel that the government has generally done a good job in trying to address the problems faced by the citizens of Singapore. The RCs in the various community areas have held meetings with the residents in order to understand their problems and have tried to solve it through the ways, though i am not sure if it really works. However, it is evident that the RCs do pay attention to the welfare of the residents, but maybe they could take neccessary measures to ensure that the methods they use really work.

For example, my father recently recieved a letter from the local RC, addressing a problem with the nearby street junction. Many accidents happened there and in conjuction with the Traffic Police, they managed to come up with a plan to ensure the safety of the motorists. They then sent a copy of the plan to every household in the area and asked for their opinions on the matter. I think this is a very effective way of solving a problem, but sadly my father didn't have the same idea. He didn't reply to the RC. Hahaz.

So sometimes, its not that the government doesn't want to ask for public opinion, but, the procedure is just too troublesome for CERTAIN people. =p
